Free criminal record check up and running at full speed again Lincoln Journal Star
For those looking to check the local criminal background of a prospective employee, tenant, Facebook friend or whatnot, the Lancaster County Attorney's Office has updated a website that allows anyone to look up that information for free.
Chief Deputy County Attorney Joe Kelly said the online court case search database has nearly real-time updates of criminal cases progressing through the justice system.
If a name is entered in the database, viewers can see whether the person has faced criminal charges in Lancaster County, as well as the outcome or where the case stands at the moment. The website went online in 1995 and the database averaged about 130,000 visits a month through 2009.
The site went dark at the beginning of this year when a new case management system was put in place in the county attorney's office.
Kelly said Friday the office heard from many people who had been using the database before it went down Jan. 4. He said they first heard from Lincoln Public Schools officials, who said they screened people for jobs with the help of the free site.
