Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-New Jersey, disclosed the updated figures Wednesday at a hearing on the so-called "Terror Gap," the name given to the ability of people on the watch list to buy weapons. "This loophole in our gun laws defies common sense and is effectively hanging out a welcome sign for terrorists to arm themselves," Sen. Lautenberg testified.

The Senate hearing on terrorists and guns was scheduled long before this past weekend's failed attempt to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square. But the timing added to the sense of urgency. Congress will appear to have "blood on our hands" if a person carries out an attack with weapons purchased while he or she was on the watch list, said Rep. Peter King, R-New York, a sponsor of the bill.

But critics of the proposal say the bill may trample on rights of law-abiding Americans who have become entangled in the lengthy Terror Watch List.

The watch list consists of approximately 400,000 people, most of whom are not U.S. citizens, the director of the Terrorist Screening Center testified in December.

My E-2 visa story

Despite a couple of confusing episodes I really didn't have a hard time with the process. I can see how others might though, especially if you don't live in a city with a consulate or near your secretary of state. I was fortunate enough to be a 10 minute drive away and I was 3 or 4 subway stops away from the SoS's office for the apostilles. Also, I was under a pretty tight time constraint. I didn't read a lot about the process in advance and I thought that I needed to have a signed contract before I could start the process, so I found myself with only 2 months between the time I started everything and when I leave for Korea (a week from now). It all worked out great, however, I would suggest getting your transcripts and criminal background check in order as soon as you decide you want to go to Korea. 3 months early would probably be an ideal time to start with that. And remember, the criminal background check can only be issued within 90 days of your visa application.

I had my mother send me my undergraduate diploma, which unfortunately was glued to its matting (she framed it). Although I got apostilled photocopies of both the undergrad and graduate diplomas, I eventually submitted the originals along with them, just to be on the safe side. I'm going to order to copies of my diplomas when I get back. Had it not been glued to the matting I could have sent it in a tube to preserve it, but since I couldn't I ended up scoring the back of the matting and folding it, thereby ruining it. Also, I didn't really need to send my grad. diploma but did it anyway, just in case there was a problem with the other. Best to cover as many bases as possible. While my hagwon was very interested in my grad. degree, the Korean government really doesn't care as far as the visa process goes...a BA is all that's required and they don't care about anything else.
