Dennis Teague wants the world to know he's not that Dennis Teague.

The 27-year-old Milwaukee man has sued the state Justice Department's Criminal Information Bureau for issuing background records to landlords and employers that misidentify him as a convicted felon despite his demands that the bureau stop. He claims the agency is costing him jobs and wrecking his reputation.

The lawsuit illustrates the dangers of confusing names and information as more employers and financial institutions request checks on potential hires and customers' credit.

The problem has grown as more job applicants flood the market in the recession, more private background check companies spring up and information becomes easier to obtain, said Gordon Leech, a Milwaukee attorney who specializes in background-check issues and runs a blog called Background Matters.

"I've talked to hundreds of people about these issues," Leech said. "The financial incentive is to provide more information rather than ensuring it's accurate."
